Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has attributed the looting and destruction of property in Nairobi and other parts of the country during the June 25, 2025 protests to a broad scheme against President William Ruto’s Government.
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday June 26, 2025, Murkomen termed the protests an attempted coup.
According to the Interior CS, the protest was terrorism disguised as dissent.
“This has nothing to do with protests, but an unconstitutional attempt to change the regime. The police were able to foil an attempted coup. Our security agencies exercised remarkable restraint amid provocation,” said Murkomen.
At the same time, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja reported that over 300 police officers were injured during the protests.
In addition, Murkomen vowed that his Ministry would not relent in apprehending the organisers and financiers of the protests.
“No church member will speak about how the police were attacked and suffered immense pain. I also know no diplomat will defend our police because it’s not in their interest for Kenya to be safe,” said the CS.
According to Murkomen, the hired criminals were aiming at police officers and were also after guns in the armouries and police uniforms.
He disclosed that criminals managed to steal 5 firearms in two separate police stations in Kiambu County.
The Interior CS further said that some offices, including courts, national government and county offices were looted and burnt.
“The criminals targeted kiosks, supermarkets, electronic shops, hotels and restaurants. Business and residential premises were burnt, including one owned by the Catholic Church in Embu County,” he revealed.
The CS emphasized that Wednesday’s protests were not spontaneous and random as alleged, but it was a well-coordinated, funded, premeditated and politically instigated uprising.
