Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has lauded residents of Tiaty Constituency for voluntarily surrendering illegal firearms, a move he says has been instrumental in restoring peace and stability in the area.
Speaking in Kolowa during a women empowerment event, Murkomen said the continued cooperation between the community and security agencies has significantly reduced insecurity that has for years affected the region.
“We agreed that all those in possession of illegal firearms should surrender them. I commend the residents of Tiaty and the neighbouring areas who have complied. I am very pleased with this positive step,” he said.

The CS noted that with the disarmament gains, communities that previously lived under fear are now conducting their daily activities without disruption.
He emphasized that the improved security has laid the foundation for government-led development programmes aimed at opening up economic opportunities.
Murkomen revealed that the government is implementing strategic interventions across Tiaty and the broader Kerio Valley region to tackle historical marginalization and drive socio-economic transformation.
“The peace we are witnessing now gives us room to invest in meaningful development. Our goal is to ensure that Tiaty is fully integrated into Kenya’s economic growth story,” he said.

The CS was accompanied by Baringo Senator Vincent Chemitei, Tiaty MP William Kamket, Taveta MP John Bwire and other local leaders, who echoed the call for sustained peace and community collaboration.
Local leaders acknowledged that the voluntary surrender of weapons is a major turning point, urging residents to remain committed to peaceful coexistence with neighbouring communities.
Murkomen assured residents that the government will continue supporting peace-building efforts while strengthening security operations to prevent a resurgence of armed conflict.
