Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has urged residents of Nyanza region to remain steadfast in their support for President William Ruto, dismissing calls to reconsider the alliance with the Head of State.
Speaking in Gem during the launch of rural electrification and renewable energy projects, Wandayi revisited the political history of 2007, recalling how Ruto stood by Raila Amolo Odinga during a turbulent period, a move he said was instrumental in Odinga’s rise to the premiership.
He argued that this legacy underscores the logic of backing Ruto for a second term.
“Anybody can run for president under ODM. Nobody has stopped you. But as a people, it is only logical that we support Ruto so that he secures a second term with our votes,” Wandayi said.
Wandayi challenged critics of the ODM-UDA alliance to present a credible alternative, questioning whether they expected the community to align with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua instead.
“Don’t just make noise. Show us the other viable option,” he added.
He further revealed that nearly all Members of Parliament from the region have resolved to support Ruto’s re-election bid, pledging to personally lead efforts to consolidate votes.
In addition, he emphasized the need for consistency in political messaging, warning against leaders who shift positions depending on the audience.
“We must be consistent. We cannot speak in tongues saying one thing today and another tomorrow. That is the only way we can lead our people,” he concluded.
At the same time, Gem Member of Parliament Elisha Odhiambo, who accompanied Wandayi at the event, echoed the call for unity, stressing that the community must consolidate its support behind Ruto to secure development gains.
The remarks, delivered at a development launch in Gem, highlight growing divisions within ODM and reinforce the shifting political dynamics as the country edges closer to the next election cycle.
