Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has revealed an elaborate railway station framework for the Narok–Kisumu and Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) sections following the project’s launch on March 21, 2026, in Kisumu County.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony at the Kibos SGR site, Chirchir outlined how the railway will integrate passenger terminals, intermediate stops, freight hubs, and operational points to enhance efficiency across the corridor.
“The line will incorporate a mix of passenger facilities, freight stations, and operational points to ensure smooth movement across the network,” he said.
He noted that Narok will host a key passenger station, while Kisumu will serve as both a passenger hub and a major cargo centre.
“We will have a passenger facility in Narok, while Kisumu will accommodate both passenger services and a major freight hub,” Chirchir stated.
Several towns along the Narok–Kisumu stretch are set to benefit from intermediate passenger stations, including Mulot, Omer, Sotik, Sogang, and Aheya, improving accessibility for communities along the route.
To support train operations, the project will also feature multiple passing and crossing points distributed across strategic locations to ease congestion and streamline traffic flow.
In addition, works at the Port of Kisumu will include an 8.9-kilometre spur line aimed at strengthening cargo handling and connectivity to the railway network.
On the Kisumu–Malaba segment, Chirchir said Malaba will act as both the main passenger terminus and a key freight centre, with additional stops planned in Yala and Mumias.

“Malaba will host the main passenger terminal alongside a major freight station, with intermediate stops in Yala and Mumias,” he explained.
He emphasized that the railway will significantly improve the movement of goods and people between Kenya and Uganda.
“The project will lower transport costs, speed up logistics, and enhance trade competitiveness,” he said.
Chirchir described the launch as a landmark moment, adding, “This marks a significant step forward for the country’s transport sector.”
