Detectives have arrested another suspect linked to a violent robbery syndicate accused of terrorizing wines and spirits traders across Kajiado, Kiambu, and Nairobi counties.
In a statement shared on its official X account, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the arrest of Paul Irungu Mwangi, describing him as “a close ally of Peter Muhia Njenga, the mastermind and chief coordinator linked to a string of robbery with violence and murder incidents.”
According to the DCI, Mwangi had gone into hiding following the arrest of some of his associates last week.
“After days of painstaking investigations and follow-up on intelligence leads, detectives drawn from DCI Headquarters smoked the suspect out of his hideout in the Sonic area of Kasarani Sub-County,” the agency stated.
The suspect is believed to have been operating alongside accomplices who remain at large. Authorities say the gang has been responsible for a wave of violent robberies that left traders living in fear.
The DCI further revealed that Mwangi and his associates are also linked to a kidnapping ring. “The suspect, together with other accomplices who are still at large, is also linked to a kidnapping gang that detectives are determined to dismantle to ensure justice for the victims,” the statement read.
Police have assured the public that operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects. “He will be processed and arraigned accordingly as the operation to weed out his remaining allies continues,” the DCI added.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in investigations targeting criminal networks preying on business owners in the three counties.
