The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released a progress report on the ongoing inquiry into the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, who died from injuries sustained in a road accident at Karai, near Eagol Petrol Station, in the early hours of December 12, 2025.
In a statement shared on its X account, the DCI confirmed that a team of detectives travelled to Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, to trace and interview individuals linked to a white Toyota Probox, registration number KDJ 564E, which was captured on CCTV footage at Eagol Petrol Station shortly after Jirongo entered and exited the premises.
Investigators recorded statements confirming that the vehicle is registered to Keringet Ward MCA and Nakuru County Assembly Majority Leader Hon. William Mutai, and is managed by his wife.
According to the DCI, it was established that on December 11, 2025, the vehicle was hired to Denis Kipyegon Koech to transport family members to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to receive their son returning from New Mexico University in the United States.
The family reportedly left Keringet on December 12 and arrived at JKIA at around 5:00 p.m., before beginning their return journey shortly after midnight.
While passing through Karai, they stopped at Eagol Petrol Station to refill wiper fluid due to poor visibility.
“They observed the deceased exiting the petrol station and heading towards Nairobi,” the DCI stated. “Moments later, they heard a loud bang and saw a bus dragging the deceased’s vehicle.”
The individuals told detectives that they briefly stopped near the accident scene at the request of a petrol station guard to assist, using their headlights to illuminate the wreckage before leaving once other motorists arrived.
“They later learned that the victim was Hon. Cyrus Jirongo,” the statement added.
The DCI said it is “interrogating the veracity of the claims” and reassured the public that “thorough and impartial investigations are ongoing.”
Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
