Five people have been admitted to Bungoma County Referral Hospital after being shot by a DCI officer at the Bungoma Law Court.
The incident was confirmed by Bungoma Police County Commander Anderson Njagi, who said the DCI officer and a prison warden were among the five injured persons.
“One DCI officer accidentally discharged one round of ammunition from his pistol and injured a prison officer, two male civilians, and a female civilian, and the officer himself was also injured in the hip,” said Njagi.
He added that police visited the scene, and helped in taking victims to hospital, although they had minor injuries.
The police commander assured judges and other judicial officers that their security is guaranteed as investigations continue.
At the same time, the judiciary issued a statement clarifying the shooting incident that occurred during the court session in Bungoma on Tuesday September 16, 2025.
“At 10:50am, during the hearing of a criminal matter in the High Court, a DCI officer’s firearm accidentally discharged a bullet, injuring him, a Kenya Prison’s Officer and three civilians,” read part of the statement from the judiciary.
According to the judiciary, all the five victims were rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital where they are undergoing treatment and are all reported to be in stable condition.
“All court officials as well as members of the public at the Court are safe and there is therefore no need for alarm. The County security team has since visited the Courts and is assessing the situation.”
