Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin has officially dismissed ongoing speculations of foul play regarding the road accident that claimed the life of veteran politician and former Lugari MP, Cyrus Jirongo.
Speaking on the progress of the case, Amin confirmed that forensic evidence and witness testimonies point to a “purely accidental” collision.
“I would like to clarify that the issue of the tragic loss of Cyrus Jirongo is under active investigations, actually we are towards the tail end of the investigation but there are all indications that it was a fatal traffic accident,” said DCI boss Mohamed Amin.
The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the busy Nakuru–Naivasha highway.
Jirongo was driving his Mercedes-Benz, registration KCZ 350C, when it collided head-on with a bus belonging to Climax Company Limited.
Meanwhile Independent pathologist Dr. Andrew Ndung’u, representing the family of the late Cyrus Jirongo, has released findings from a post-mortem examination confirming the cause of death.
According to Dr. Ndung’u, the veteran politician died from multiple blunt force trauma. The autopsy revealed extensive internal damage consistent with a high-impact head-on collision.
the impact caused severe internal injuries to the thoracic and abdominal cavities, leading to fatal hemorrhaging, alongside significant damage to the spine that underscored the violent force of the 25-meter vehicle displacement.
Furthermore, the examination detailed multiple fractures and soft tissue injuries to the lower extremities, as well as severe head trauma, which aligned with initial police reports identifying it as a primary factor in his immediate death at the scene.
Forensic reconstruction
The DCI’s reconstruction of the events was bolstered by critical CCTV footage from the Eagol Petrol Station.
The timeline reveals that Jirongo entered the station at 2:18:40 a.m. but did not fuel. After stopping at the exit for nine seconds, he turned right toward Nairobi at 2:19:19 a.m.
The devastating impact occurred just six seconds later at 2:19:25 a.m. The force of the collision was so severe that it pushed the Mercedes approximately 25 meters from the point of impact. Jirongo sustained fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Final findings
Detectives have recorded statements from the bus driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, as well as station attendants and guards.
To establish a complete profile of the evening, investigators also traced Jirongo’s final movements to the Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
Addressing concerns raised by family and political peers regarding the “ghostly silence” of the bus passengers and the timing of the trip, Amin emphasized that the data does not support a conspiracy.
The investigation is now at its “tail end,” with the final file being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Cyrus Jirongo, a towering figure in Kenyan politics and former chairman of the YK92, will be laid to rest at his Lumakanda home in Kakamega on December 30, 2025.
