Kisa East ward made political history on Thursday after electing Aduda Okwiri of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) as its new Member of County Assembly, marking the party’s first-ever elective victory since its unveiling earlier this year.
The by-election was held to fill the seat left vacant following the tragic death of former MCA Stephen Maloba, who was stabbed during a political rally in 2023.
His passing cast a long shadow over the ward, and for many residents, this election symbolized both healing and a fresh start.
Across all 24 polling stations, the race drew keen competition.
In the final tally, Aduda Okwiri of DCP dominated the contest with 1,952 votes, emerging far ahead of his closest challenger. Joel Ongoro of MDG followed with 1,541 votes, while Abraham Ayaya of DAP-K came in third with 944 votes.
Other candidates trailed behind: Raphael Mukolwe Namai of DNA collected 629 votes, Khatete Mumia of KANU garnered 200, and James Shiraku of UDA secured 61 votes.
John Masetu Shikunyi of ODM received 34 votes, Douglas Shitote of UDP managed 49, and Stephen Amwayi Nyabuto of UDM got 8 votes. Pauline Uside of JFP registered 6 votes, while David Muchelule of the Agano Party earned 27.
The decisive victory by Okwiri was met with celebrations among DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala and DCP supporters, who described it as a milestone for the young party and a sign of shifting political tides in Kakamega County.
Residents expressed hope that the new MCA will honor the memory of the late Maloba by championing peace, development, and unity in the ward.
