Defence lawyers criticize DCI over handling of fake IDs suspects

Defence attorneys have condemned the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for holding suspects without sufficient evidence and publicly shaming them by posting their photographs online in a case involving alleged fake Identification Documents.

The legal team pointed out that several suspects were facing health challenges, including a nursing mother who was unable to breastfeed her child while in custody.

Lawyer Danstan Omari noted that authorities had already issued apologies for certain wrongful detentions, describing the situation as sufficient humiliation for those affected.

Senior Counsel Harun Ndubi contended that the arrests infringed upon constitutional protections and that there was no legitimate justification for connecting the accused individuals to terrorism-related activities.

Professor Nandwa referenced one case where an immigration official was apprehended solely for possessing his personal mobile phone.

The defence counsel called on the court to take into account the vulnerable circumstances of young mothers and sick detainees currently in custody.

Magistrate Kiage is scheduled to announce a decision regarding the detention application on December 11, 2025.
