Social media sensation Dem wa Facebook, whose real name is Millicent Ayuwa, recently offered a candid look into her journey, from her time in school to her current life as a content creator, during an appearance on Radio 47’s Gumzo 47 Stori yangu.
The interview, hosted by the veteran radio duo Alex Mwakideu and Emmanuel Mwashumbe, was praised by listeners for its respectful and elegant tone.
Millicent’s early schooling was marked by an independent streak that made her unsuited for boarding school life. She attended Kabefe Primary for her nursery up to Class 8. She then joined Brenda Girls Misikhu for Form 1 but repeatedly ran away. The restrictive boarding school life, coupled with her dislike of the food (specifically the githeri and cabbage), proved too much for her.
To prevent her from running home, her father made a decisive move, transferring her far away to Nasokol Girls’ School in West Pokot for her third term of Form 1.
She ultimately completed her secondary education there, achieving a respectable C+ on her KCSE exams.
After high school, Dem wa Facebook pursued a surprising vocational path. She enrolled at Bungoma Polytechnic Sangalo to study Civil Engineering, specialising in plumbing.
“I became a plumber because I wanted to get a government tender and be a millionaire,” she said
Her inspiration came from interactions at building sites, known locally as mjengo. She was particularly struck when the main plumber showed her the lucrative quotation for equipment. This shattered her initial perception that plumbers were “poor people and losers.”
However, she did not complete the course. She claims she paused her studies in her second year due to a lack of funds for fees, not a complete dropout.
Jokingly, she admitted she wanted to be an “office plumber,” but realised the job requires hands-on work “on the grounds.”
She still maintains a plan to return to school when she is ready in the future.
The plumbing dream was soon replaced by the allure of the entertainment industry. Dem wa Facebook saw an opportunity to make money through art and content creation.
“Niliona usanii iko na pesa, na ni ukweli.” she said
Her journey into the limelight began with a simple direct message (DM) to a Western Kenya content creator named Godfrey.
She had always had a flair for performance, wanting the microphone during her first cultural day in college.
Godfrey featured her in one of his skits, which unexpectedly went viral, kick-starting her career.
Her breakthrough moment came after performing at the Churchill Show in Kakamega. This gave her the confidence to seek opportunities in Nairobi, where she looked to collaborate with established creators like Mulamwah.
Her parents offered crucial support for her ambitious move to the capital. They “supported and prayed for her,” telling her, “Go and shine, with God you can do it.”
“Hii life ukitaka kitu lazima ujitume, juu kila mtu anafanya kenye unataka sasa wewe utafanya nini tofauti nao.” she said
When questioned about her love life, Dem wa Facebook was happy to confirm she has a boyfriend, with whom she has been dating for almost three years.
They had been friends for one year before the relationship began. she also confirmed he is from Kenya but refused to reveal his face or profession, stating he is not an artist. She also added that they enjoy a lot of takeaways, including KFC, as she has never cooked for him.
She firmly drew a line under the topic of her personal life, telling the hosts
“Sura mtaonea kwa watoto na Mwachane na mambo ya watu wawili.”
The elephant in the room was her dramatic, public fallout with comedian Oga Obinna, which was the core reason for the public’s interest in her.
While she has previously described her time on Obinna’s show, Kalenjin Fish Market, as her “lowest moment,” she refused to re-open old wounds on the Mwakideu and Mwashumbe show.
“Nlishaongea kuhusu hio kwa, ile interview na niliwacha huko sina kitu cha kusema, tuwache hio stori.”
She assured the hosts and listeners that she is now “100%” good, signalling a desire to move past the controversy.
