Multi-agency team led by the KDF successfully brings down condemned 11-storey building

Kenya Defense Force led a multiagency team in the controlled demolition of a condemned 11-story building on Wednesday afternoon.

The success of the demolition means that resident can continue with their daily business with the fear of a potential disaster.

The building, located off Abdel Nasser Road, was brought down using explosives at exactly 12:56 p.m. under KDF supervision.

No casualties were reported, and surrounding buildings remained intact as the structure collapsed safely into a pile of rubble.

The County Government of Mombasa had released a visual map showing the 1.2-kilometer safety radius for the upcoming controlled demolition of a compromised building.
The 11-storey structure, located on plot No. XLVI/195/MI in Kilifi Corner, began sinking on April 2, 2025 prompting emergency action.
Officials now urge residents to strictly stay outside the marked red circle during the operation.

Visual Aid for public awareness
According to the Governor’s Press Service, the shared image serves as a vital tool to help the public understand the safety perimeters put for designated areas to ensure safety.
The Department of Lands, Housing, and Urban Planning prepared and mapped the area in coordination with demolition planners.
The visual clearly highlights affected zones: Tononoka, Ganjoni, Kizingo, and parts of Majengo.
Residents were advised to use the map to determine whether they fall within the danger zone.

Why the demolition is critical
Structural engineers and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) confirmed the building’s condition was too unstable for occupation following a joint inspection where authorities deemed it a major threat to nearby businesses, homes, and public institutions.

Governor’s call to action
Governor Abdulswamad Nassir commended residents for cooperating and vacating the area however, he called on the remaining few to urgently evacuate for their own safety.
The governor emphasized the red-circled area as an absolute no-go zone on demolition day.
