Spanish police investigations indicate that Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was driving his Lamborghini when a sudden tyre blow-out led to the horrific car crash that claimed his life and that of his brother, Andre Silva, in northwest Spain.
The devastating incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, sending shockwaves through the global football community.
According to Sky Sports, police investigations suggest the Liverpool star was overspeeding on the A-52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria.
However, authorities also emphasised that marks left by one of the vehicle’s tyres indicate Jota crashed accidentally while attempting to avoid a collision.
A police statement, as reported by BBC, confirmed: “All the evidence so far indicates that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota. The expert report is in the final stages, but as it is subject to judicial review, it will be submitted to the Puebla de Sanabria court.”
The tragic accident comes just under two weeks after Jota, 27, married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, in Porto.
The couple shared three children. Jota and his brother were reportedly en route to the port in Santander, intending to catch a ferry to England, where the Liverpool star was due to resume pre-season training after being advised against flying due to recent lung surgery.
The football world is in mourning following the loss of the talented forward. Meanwhile, locals from Cernailla have voiced strong dissatisfaction with the A-52 motorway’s condition, labelling it a “goat track” and a “death trap” following the incident, per The Mirror.
Road users are now urgently calling on Spanish authorities to declare a state of emergency on the road in the wake of Jota’s death.
