Doctor explains what makes Okra a ‘superfood’

A proud member of the mallow family and a close cousin to hibiscus, cotton, and even cocoa, okra is among the world’s oldest cultivated crops. With roots tracing back over a thousand years to the African region around Ethiopia and Eritrea, this humble pod carries a rich history as vibrant as its flavor.

Dr. Alok Chopra, a renowned cardiologist, took to his Instagram page to share the benefits of the widely available vegetable.

Health benefits of okra

  • Regulates blood sugar: Okra’s rich insoluble fiber may help stabilize blood sugar levels by slowing sugar absorption in the intestinal tract—a benefit invaluable for individuals with diabetes. “Studies have suggested that consuming up to 1000 mcgs of okra every six hours for eight weeks can have a significant impact on HbA1c and sugar reduction,” Dr. Chopra said.
  • Boosts metabolism: Packed with antioxidants and polyphenols, okra helps boost metabolism, enabling the body to burn calories more efficiently and support weight loss. Its high fiber content also slows sugar absorption, preventing insulin spikes that can trigger fat storage.
  • Maintains blood pressure: Potassium in okra helps balance sodium levels, maintaining proper fluid balance in the body. It also eases pressure on the cardiovascular system by relaxing blood vessels and arteries.
  • Soothes the stomach lining: According to Dr. Chopra, okra soothes the stomach lining due to its gel-like extract (mucilage), which helps neutralize stomach acid and coat the digestive tract with a protective lining.

Dr. Chopra added that another way to include okra in your diet is by having okra water.

To make okra water, take 2-3 okra parts and wash them thoroughly. Cut off the ends and make small slits. Soak them in a glass of water and leave them overnight. Strain the water and drink it in the morning, but on an empty stomach.
