DPP directs IPOA to submit report on Albert Ojwang’s death within 7 days

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Ingonga, has urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct investigations into Albert Ojwang’s death and submit a report within 7 days for review and appropriate action.

In a statement shared on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 the ODPP said he is closely following the circumstances surrounding the death of Albert Ojwang’.

“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is keenly following the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Albert Ojwang.”

In addition, Ingonga highlighted that his directive to conduct the investigations in urgency is indeed constitutional.

“In light of the foregoing and pursuant to Article 157(4) of the , and constitution, Section 5 (2) of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act, Cap, 6B of the laws of Kenya, the Director Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed the IPOA to expedite the said investigations. The resultant investigation file should be submitted to the OPP within seven (7) days for review and appropriate action,” he wrote.

Albert Ojwang’ died on Sunday, June 8, while in police custody at Central Police Station in Nairobi, following his arrest over alleged false publication on social media against DIG of police Eliud Lagat.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered the suspension of senior police officers at the Central Police Station, in Nairobi following the death of Albert Ojwang in the cells.

This was after public pressure for accountability on the tragic death of Ojwang while in police custody at the station.

In a statement dated June 8, 2025, the police IG explained that the suspension of officers at the station would help in facilitating impartial investigations by IPOA.
