Kisumu is in mourning following the untimely passing of Hon. Salmon Orimba, a man fondly remembered for his transformative leadership and unmatched commitment to public service.
For Dr. Philip Pande, who served closely with him as Personal Assistant and Strategic Advisor during Orimba’s tenure as County Executive for Water, Environment, Irrigation and Natural Resources, the loss is deeply personal.
“Waziri Orimba was not just a leader; he was a visionary and mentor who believed in excellence,” Dr. Pande reflected. “Together we achieved milestones that changed the face of Kisumu, from the historic relocation of the 50-year-old Kachok dumpsite to making Kisumu Kenya’s cleanest city, second only to Kigali.”
Under Orimba’s leadership, Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company found its permanent home, while new environmental policies elevated community livelihoods and sustainability efforts. His approach was marked by energy, precision and passion for the public good.
“He led with purpose,” Dr. Pande added. “Even beyond his office, he remained a friend, advisor and motivator to many. His death is a painful loss to Kisumu and to all who had the privilege to serve with him.”
Public Reactions: A City in Grief
Across Kisumu, tributes poured in for the fallen leader whose influence extended well beyond county offices.
Mary Achieng, a trader at Kibuye Market, recalled Orimba’s humility:
“He would come to our stalls, talk to us and listen. He never forgot the common people.”
Elijah Otieno, a boda boda rider in Nyalenda, said Orimba’s death feels personal.
“We’ve lost someone who worked for the people. He made Kisumu cleaner, better. It’s a big blow.”
At the County offices, staff described him as approachable and committed.
“He always had time for everyone, from senior officers to casual workers,” said a County Environment Officer. “We’ll miss his laughter and the way he inspired us to work harder.”
A Legacy Etched in Service
Hon. Orimba was widely regarded as one of Kisumu’s longest-serving and most impactful County Executive Members, a record that defined his deep sense of responsibility and consistency.
Beyond public office, he was a respected entrepreneur and mentor whose generosity and mentorship transformed lives.
“He led with his heart,” Dr. Pande said quietly. “Even in private, he was a pillar to many. His spirit of service will continue to guide us.”
As Kisumu mourns, the city remembers a man whose life embodied action, compassion and transformation, a leader who left every place better than he found it.
