Driftwood Sevens kicks off 2025 National Circuit in Mombasa

The highly anticipated 2025 National Sevens Circuit is set to explode into action this weekend with the first leg, the Driftwood Sevens, taking place on July 26th and 27th at the Mombasa Sports Club.

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has released the much-awaited pool draws for both Division One and Division Two, signaling that all systems are go for the championship.

In Division One, defending circuit champions Kenya Harlequins headline Pool A, where they will face off against MMUST, KU Blak Blad, and Mwamba RFC.

Pool B promises intense action with Kenya Cup winners Kabras Sugar RFC taking on Catholic Monks, Nakuru RFC, and Impala RFC.

Last year’s circuit runners-up, KCB RFC, are placed in Pool C alongside Nondescripts RFC, Daystar Falcons, and the host team, MSC Rugby.

Rounding out Division One, Pool D features Menengai Oilers, Strathmore Leos, Stallions Rugby, and Kabarak University, a group poised for unpredictable contests.

The Division Two competition will be equally fierce, with 36 teams having applied to compete. The KRU’s stringent criteria for pool placement ensured a balanced draw.

Six slots were reserved for KRU affiliate clubs, seven for coastal region teams, four based on past tournament performance, and three allocated according to previous circuit leg rankings.

The Division Two pools include: Pool A with AP Warriors, Kilifi Titans, Likoni RFC, and University of Nairobi Mean Machine.

Pool B features Embu RFC, Kaya Rugby, North Coast Stormers, and MKU Thika. Homeboyz RFC will headline Pool C against Jackals, NYS Eagles, and Makueni RFC.

Pool D comprises Kisumu RFC, KCNP, NYS Spades, and Sigalagala NP. Finally, Pool E will see South Coast Pirates, Vihiga Granites, Zetech Oaks, and Northern Suburbs battling for knockout stage berths.

The Driftwood Sevens remains a cornerstone of the local rugby calendar, renowned for its competitive spirit and vibrant community atmosphere.

As the opening leg of the six-stop circuit, it will set the tone for a thrilling season that will subsequently move to Nakuru, Nairobi, Embu, Machakos, and Kisumu.
