Dutch national faces deportation after spitting on Police in Diani

A Dutch national, Elwin Ter Horst, is facing deportation from Kenya after being filmed verbally abusing and spitting on police officers at Diani Police Station in Kwale County.

The disturbing footage, which has gone viral, shows Horst appearing intoxicated and agitated — shouting at officers before spitting and blowing mucus toward one of them in a shocking act of contempt.

According to police reports, the 40-year-old foreigner was arrested on Tuesday evening for assault his Kenyan girlfriend, creating a disturbance, malicious damage to property, and possession of narcotics. Further investigations revealed that his passport had expired, making his stay in Kenya illegal.

Msambweni Police Commander Robinson Langat confirmed that deportation procedures were underway, describing Horst’s conduct as “unacceptable and disgraceful.”

“No visitor is above the law. We welcome all tourists, but those who breach our laws or disrespect officers will be dealt with firmly,” Langat stated.

Horst, who has since been arraigned at the Kwale Law Courts, expressed remorse over the incident, claiming he was suffering from mental distress at the time.

“I had a psychosis. I need my medicine… I had no water or food for a long time,” he said during his apology, identifying himself by the alias ‘Mufasa.’

Police say Horst’s case highlights the challenges of handling unruly foreign nationals, particularly those overstaying their visas or violating public order laws.

Authorities in Kwale have commended the officers for exercising restraint despite provocation, and have urged the public to respect police officers in the line of duty.

Horst remains in custody as the Directorate of Immigration Services finalizes deportation formalities.
