EACC arrests two traffic officers on Likoni–Lungalunga road over alleged bribery

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two traffic police officers attached to the Diani Traffic Base for allegedly soliciting bribes from motorists along the busy Likoni–Lungalunga road.

The officers, identified as Police Constable Agnes Longoet and Police Constable Alphanus Anayo, were arrested following an intelligence-led operation mounted after EACC received multiple complaints from members of the public.

According to the Commission, motorists reported rampant extortion by the officers, who allegedly demanded bribes without carrying out any lawful traffic checks or enforcing road safety regulations.

“The arrests follow numerous complaints from motorists and members of the public regarding persistent extortion along the Likoni–Lungalunga road,” EACC said in a statement. “During the operation, the officers were found soliciting and demanding bribes from motorists without conducting vehicle inspections or enforcing traffic laws.”

The suspects were taken to the EACC Lower Coast Regional Office in Mombasa, where they recorded statements as investigations continue. The Commission said the officers will be processed in line with the law before being presented for further action.

The arrest comes amid a wider crackdown by EACC targeting bribery and corruption on major Kenyan roads, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes are high.

“This operation is part of our ongoing efforts to curb bribery on Kenyan roads,” the Commission noted. “We are scaling up intelligence gathering and surveillance, especially in essential public service sectors that are prone to corruption.”

EACC warned public officers against abusing their positions for personal gain, emphasizing that such actions undermine public trust and compromise service delivery.

Motorists have been encouraged to report any cases of bribery or extortion to the Commission, with EACC reiterating its commitment to act swiftly on credible information.

“The fight against corruption requires collective effort,” the statement added. “We urge members of the public to continue coming forward with information to help us hold culpable officers accountable.”

The Commission said more operations are expected as it intensifies enforcement measures during the holiday period.
