East African golf is experiencing a significant uplift on the global stage, with numerous regional players making remarkable strides on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) following the recently concluded Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing.
The two tournaments, held at Thika Greens Golf Resort and Ruiru Sports Club, proved to be pivotal, offering crucial OWGR points that are set to redefine careers and Olympic dreams.
The events attracted a competitive field of professionals and elite amateurs from six nations – Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, and South Africa. Critically, all golfers who made the cut earned valuable OWGR points.
Four golfers – Kenya’s veteran Dismas Indiza, Njoroge Kibugu, elite amateur John Lejirma, and Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera – have impressively broken into the top 3,000 of the world rankings after just these two tournaments. Even more remarkably, a total of ten golfers from the region have moved over 1,000 places up the global ladder.
Leading this charge is Kakamega Sports Club’s Dismas Indiza, whose dramatic playoff victory over John Lejirma at Ruiru saw him surge an astonishing 2,241 places to reach 2,354th globally.
This achievement is particularly significant as it marks Indiza’s first world ranking points in nine years, his last being in 2016.
Royal Nairobi Golf Club’s John Lejirma, Africa’s fourth-highest ranked elite male amateur, also made a historic debut on the OWGR, climbing to 2,710th after his second-place finish at Ruiru. “It feels great to see myself make an entry in the world rankings. This tour has changed the game for players like me,” said Lejirma, highlighting the tour’s impact.
Other notable movers include debutants Rizwan Charania and Samuel Njoroge, and the Kibugu brothers, Mutahi and Njoroge, who both enjoyed substantial climbs. Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera also made his OWGR debut, reaching 2,895th.
The Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing is the only golf tour in the East and Central African region offering OWGR points, which are vital for progression to higher-tier tours like the Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour, and PGA Tour. Crucially, these points are the exclusive pathway for qualification to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing Promoter Charles Gacheru affirmed the success, stating, “What we are seeing today is the exact vision we had when launching this Swing. To see players from across East Africa, for the first time in their careers, making world ranking moves is historic. It is our conviction that through this Tour, our golfers will have a golden chance to qualify for the Olympics and fly the flags of their respective countries.”
