CASUAL WORKERS AT SHIMANZI PORT LAMENT LOW WAGES AND EXPLOITATION
Casual workers at Shimanzi Port have held a demonstration today asking their employers to review their wages as per their conract and to stop the exploitation that has been going on for twenty years.
Police used teargas to disperse the protesters, an act that was not taken well by the casual workers since they only wanted to be heard and action taken to save them from exploitation. The casual workers have sworn not to resume their jobs until their wage has been increased and the terms of contract has been met.
The casual workers called out the Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, Honorable Alfred Mutua to save them from exploitation from brokers who have invaded their territory making them get so little yet they are the ones doing the hard labor.
Some times back, the government had asked them to come up with a union that will unite them as casual workers and they lamented that despite doing that, their plea for increase of wages is falling on deaf ears. the agreed amount was between 15-25ksh but lately the OCS came up with a lower figure making it hard for them to meet their needs.
Crying to the government during the demonstration the casual workers asked why the police were deployed to interfere with their peaceful demonstration yet all they want is someone to listen to them and act accordingly.
