Multiple Olympic champions Eliud Kipchoge and Sifan Hassan will headline the Sydney Marathon this Sunday (31), as the race makes its debut on the Abbott World Marathon Majors calendar.
The 2025 edition of the TCS Sydney Marathon Presented by ASICS has assembled one of the strongest fields in the event’s history. The women’s line-up features six athletes with personal bests under 2:19, while the men’s field includes nine sub-2:05 runners.
Kipchoge, the Kenyan marathon great, will be making his first appearance not only in Sydney but also in Oceania. With 16 wins from 22 official marathons, including 11 World Marathon Majors titles and two Olympic gold medals, he remains the most decorated marathoner in history.
He still holds the second-fastest marathon time at 2:01:09 and comes into the race after finishing sixth at the 2025 London Marathon in 2:05:25.
“This is not only my first time racing the TCS Sydney Marathon, but also my first time running in Oceania. Competing in Australia is a huge opportunity for me. Sydney looks like a stunning city with so many iconic sights. It’s going to be a new and special experience for me,” Kipchoge said.
He will renew his rivalry with compatriot Vincent Ngetich, who ran 2:03:13 to finish second to Kipchoge at the 2023 Berlin Marathon. Ngetich has also registered back-to-back podium finishes in Tokyo in 2024 and 2025. Other big names in the men’s field include sub-2:04 runners Birhanu Legese and Dawit Wolde.
In the women’s field, Dutch star Sifan Hassan lines up against Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei, the former world record-holder, and defending champion Workenesh Edesa.
Hassan has already won three of her five marathons, including the Paris 2024 Olympic title, while Kosgei brings her pedigree of five World Marathon Majors victories and a personal best of 2:14:04.
