The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairperson Issak Hassan confirmed that the Deputy Inspector General Eluid Lagat is scheduled, to record a statement on the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang’ today.
“DIG Lagat needs to appear before us to shed light on the investigations and give his side of the story. We assure the public that there will be no sacred cows in this quest for justice,” Isak said.
The tragic death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’ has triggered a national uproar, with Kenyans demanding accountability from the police service and subsequently demonstration that have been witnessed in the Nairobi City CBD.
Lagat voluntarily stepped down from his position on Monday, June 16, saying he made the decision in good and conscious thought of the public interest and promised to cooperate in the investigations.
“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations,” Lagat stated.
Lagat is a person of interest in the case since he made a formal complaint against Ojwang’ alleging defamation through a post on X(formerly twitter)
According to IPOA at least 20 police officers have been summoned to give a statement, including the Central Police Station OCS Samson Talam and Police Constable James Mukhwana, who have been arrested in connection to the case.
