Elon Musk has publicly expressed regret for his recent harsh criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump, signaling a possible truce between the two high-profile figures after a week of escalating tensions.
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X on Wednesday morning. “They went too far.”
The rift between Musk and Trump became public after Musk, who had been a key figure in Trump’s efforts to reduce federal spending earlier this year, abruptly left the administration.
Following his departure, Musk took to X to lambast Trump’s flagship legislative package—dubbed the “big, beautiful bill”—which is currently before the Senate and encompasses major elements of Trump’s agenda, including tax cuts and stricter immigration enforcement.
Musk called the bill a “disgusting abomination,” drawing a sharp rebuke from Trump, who accused Musk of having “gone crazy” and threatened to cancel federal contracts and subsidies for Musk’s companies.
The situation escalated further when Musk, without evidence, accused Trump of being named in the so-called Epstein files—documents related to the investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein—and suggested this was the reason for their continued secrecy.
Musk later deleted these posts, along with others critical of Trump.
Calls for reconciliation surfaced on X, with one user urging Musk and Trump to “make peace” for the good of the country. Musk replied, “You’re not wrong.”
Trump, meanwhile, has dialed back his own rhetoric. In an interview with POLITICO, he appeared unbothered by the spat, saying, “Oh it’s OK. It’s going very well, never done better.”
