End of an era as last Mau Mau General Kiambati dies at 106

Kenya has lost its last living link to the Mau Mau uprising, General Kiambati wa Njora.

He was the final surviving member of the 12 generals who led the armed struggle against British colonial rule.

He passed away on February 3, 2026 in the morning at his home in Ngorika, Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County at the age of 106.

His death was confirmed by his son Maina Kiambati who attributed the death to old age on February 3rd, 2026.

Maina said his late father had spent the weekend with his children and grandchildren at their home in Ngorika and even held a memorial service for a grandson who died ten years ago.

His body was moved from home to a funeral home in Nakuru town, as burial arrangements kick off.

Kiambati’s death comes soon after that of Brigadier John Kiboko (Born Ihoya Kagwe) August 2023 and buried in Ngorika, Ol Kalou constituency, that of Mukami Kimathi, wife of Mau Mau hero, Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi, who was buried in Njabini in Kinangop constituency in May 2023 and another Major Ka-Chef (Agnes Muthoni Kinyua) who died last year and interred in Shamata, Ndaragwa constituency.

General Kiambati represented the last direct connection to the men and women who risked everything fighting for the country’s independence.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga was among the first to pay tribute to the fallen hero.

“General Kiambati wa Njora one among the last surviving MAU MAU Generals has rested at the prime age of 106. It is worthy of celebrating his life, his heroism but most of all, for his sacrifice for our freedom. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Governor Kahiga said.

The governor went on to honor the legacy of other freedom fighters, expressing hope that General Kiambati would join them.

“May he find company in the presence and heroic company of the legends who left before him, in the awesome presence of Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi wa Waciuri, in the majestic shadow of Field Marshal Muthoni Kirima, in the stoic ambivalent Gen Ndungu wa Giceru,” Kahiga stated.

He also mentioned other celebrated Mau Mau heroes including Field Marshal Mama Mukami Kimathi, General Stanley Mathenge, General Musa Mwariama, General Chui, General Baimungi Marete, General Kubu Kubu, General Matenjagwo, and General Kassim Gichimu.

“To his family, poleni sana and thank you for birthing for us such a gallant warrior!” Governor Kahiga concluded, extending condolences to the bereaved family.
