Popular Kenyan comedian and activist, Eric Omondi has expressed his disappointment at Meshack Ojwang’, the father of the late blogger Albert Ojwang’ after he took a Ksh 2 million donation from President William Ruto.
Eric said he felt so emotional because he had worked hard to get people to support Albert’s family after the blogger tragically died while in police custody.
This was after Meshack Ojwang’ confirmed that President William Ruto called the family to comfort them and offered Ksh2 million to help with funeral expenses.
Opposition leader, Raila Odinga also gave Ksh 1 million to Ojwang’s family and called from abroad to issue his condolences.
He reiterated that accepting money from the same government that he blames for Albert’s death hurts the cause that he has been actively supporting.
According to Eric Omondi, Kenyans have already donated more than Ksh 10 million to help the family hence there was no need to accept the president’s donation.
“We shared the father’s number, ‘ikajaa’, that is Ksh 1 million. We then shared his second number, it also was filled, then we shared that of his mum, the widow and they all filled. I also opened a paybill for the family which is under the wife and mother. As we speak, that paybill has KSh 2.6 million,” Eric stressed.
Even though these actions could be seen as compassion from these top government officials, Eric explained that accepting money from the government was a disloyal act to the Kenyans who had donated.
Kenyans on social media have had different reactions to the situation. Some say they feel bad for Albert Ojwang’s father because they understand that the tough economic times might have made him take the donation.
Others feel disappointed, saying that taking money from the very system that supposedly failed his son is contradictory.
