Nairobi County Member of Parliament Esther Passaris has come out to strongly defend Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat.
This was after calls for the dismissal of DIG Eliud Lagat over the death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
DIG Eliud Lagat has been accused of allegedly ordering the arrest of Albert Ojwang’ over the alleged publication of false information on social media.
However, Passaris, claims she was with Lagat on Sunday, June 8, 2025 during a Kenya Alliance of Residents Association meeting when the news broke.
She further described Lagat’s composure on hearing the news, saying that he showed genuine surprise, unlike that of someone who was already aware of the incident.
“I was with the Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, during a Kenya Alliance of Residents Association meeting on Sunday when the news broke. He was completely out of the loop. His composure reflected genuine surprise not that of someone aware of, let alone involved in the death of Albert Ojwang,” Passaris posted on her X account on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Additionally, Political scientist Mutahi Ngunyi, cautioned that focusing on the wrong suspects could give way for the real culprits of Ojwang’s death to walk free. He also urged Kenyans to focus on facts, rather than making up their minds.
“If I killed Albert Ojwang using police networks, then blamed it on DIG Lagat, who would defend Eliud Lagat? He has no rights. Why? We have made up our minds. Do not confuse us with the facts. If I killed Ojwang, and we push for #ArrestEliudLagat, the killer would walk free. True?” Mutahi Ngunyi posted on X.
The debate over Albert Ojwang’s death continues to divide public opinion as pressure lies on IPOA, who were tasked to conduct thorough investigations on the case and submit the report to the ODPP within 7 days.
