Esther Passaris uses AI-generated photo to highlight data protection concerns on digital manipulation

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris posted a photograph on her social media platforms, today Wednesday 28th January, 2026, featuring herself and Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, which sparked confusion among online users.

“Our ages. 61 plus 37 = 98 but 99 sounds better. 99 Problems and @pksalasya ain’t one. Mumias East, a word for your Mwesh,” Passaris captioned the post.

She subsequently provided clarification, revealing the post’s true purpose.

“Today is Data Protection Day. This image shows how easily reality can be manipulated. One version is AI-generated with Salasya. One is real. In today’s digital age, it’s becoming harder to tell the difference, which is why privacy, ethical data use, and responsible sharing matter more than ever,” Passaris explained.

She emphasized the importance of digital protection, stating that “data protection, digital ethics, and stronger cyber laws, including Kenya’s cybercrime and data protection frameworks, are not just ‘tech issues.’ They protect real people from digital harm.”

Passaris concluded with a warning: “Always verify because in 2026, seeing is no longer believing. #DataProtectionDay.”
