EXPLAINER: Could Prophet Owuor face arrest over his healing claims?

CrimeEXPLAINER

Prophet David Owuor, the polarizing religious figure with an unconventional prophetic ministry is making headlines following an expose by TV47 on his HIV/AIDS healing gimmicks.
In a recent revival meeting, a couple of people claimed to have been healed from HIV/AIDS, and this was supported by medical officers who are under probe by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).

TV47 however, unearthed that the medical records of those that claimed to have been healed from HIV/AIDS were faux.
Interestingly, a similar incident landed a self proclaimed prophetess in prison for two years.
Prophetess Lucy Nduta was arrested in 2006 and charged with six counts of fraud.

Now, it is important to note that false prophesy is not a crime in Kenya however fraud is.
So this is how Lucy used to operate; she’d purport to heal her victims who would pay for those services then she would ask them to get tests from clinics she had colluded with and the tests results would indeed read negative.

This posed a real danger to the victims as they did away with medication resulting in serious health complications in future. She was found guilty and was sentenced to 2 years in prison.

Lucy Nduta also happens to be Pastor Victor Kanyari’s mother, who the Director of Public Prosecution ordered that he be investigated for fraud, in 2014 after a TV expose but he was never charged.
He has however, been charged with defilement and sentenced to life imprisonment but he appealed and the charges were dropped due to inconsistency of evidence during trial.
