Exploring employment opportunities in Kenya’s Blue Economy sector

As the country faces the unemployment crisis, the Blue economy Sector is seen to have a lot of untapped job opportunities. This is linked to lack of awareness among people and has made the sector unpopular.

Despite the many opportunities in the Blue Economy, there is a low turn out and participation in activities involving the Blue Economy in Kenya.

As preparations for the Kenya Maritime and Shipping Dialogue 2025 is underway, Kenyans and more especially women and youths have been called upon to participate in this year’s dialogue that is set to drive National Conversation on jobs, innovation and sea services.

The stakeholders of the Blue Economy Sector urged the government and relevant agencies to offer training and educational support to young people who are eager to explore Maritime careers which will improve employment prospects in Kenya.

Under the theme: “Unlocking Maritime Labor Potential and Enhancing Sea Services for a Sustainable  Blue Economy,” the dialogue brings together youth, maritime professionals, government officials and industry stakeholders to explore opportunities, policy gaps and the future of Maritime Labor and Sea Services in Kenya.

This year’s Dialogue builds on the foundation laid in 2023, when over 750 youth convened in Mombasa to engage on maritime opportunities. Now expanded into a national platform, the event aims to bridge the gap between maritime policy and youth inclusion, offering actionable pathways to employment, innovation and investment in the sector.

“We believe this dialogue is not just a conversation-it’s a platform to unlock access and create visibility for young people and emerging enterprises across the blue economy,” said Gilbert Were, Founder of Kenya Maritime Dialogue.

The Kenya Maritime and Shipping Dialogue is part of a larger effort to address underreported topics and regional development through media, policy and multi-stakeholder engagement.
