Faith Cherotich claims steeplechase victory in Doha Diamond League with world-leading time

Olympic bronze medalist Faith Cherotich delivered a standout performance at the third leg of the 2025 Diamond League in Doha, Qatar, winning the women’s 3,000m steeplechase with a world-leading time of 9:05.08.

Cherotich, 20, held off a fierce challenge from Olympic champion Winfred Yavi Mutile of Bahrain, who finished just 0.18 seconds behind in 9:05.26. Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew completed the podium with a season’s best of 9:09.27.

Cherotich led for much of the race, briefly losing ground in the penultimate lap as Yavi surged forward. However, she regained her composure and unleashed a decisive kick in the final 50 meters to secure her second consecutive Diamond League victory, following her triumph at last September’s season finale in Brussels.

Kenyan athletes continued to impress in Doha. In the women’s 1500m, Nelly Chepchirchir captured the title with a season’s best of 4:05.00, the fourth fastest time in the world this year.

Compatriot Susan Ejore finished second in 4:06.27, while Britain’s Jemma Reekie placed third in 4:07.33.

In the men’s 5000m, former World U20 champion Reynold Cheruiyot dominated the field, winning in a personal best of 13:16.40. Switzerland’s Dominic Lobalu and Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew both clocked 13:17.70, finishing second and third, respectively4.

The men’s 800m saw Commonwealth champion Wycliffe Kinyamal take third place in a season’s best of 1:43.37, behind Botswana’s Tshepiso Maselela (1:43.11, world lead) and American Bryce Hoppel (1:43.26).

In the field events, former world javelin champion Julius Yego finished ninth with a seasonal best of 78.52m, while Germany’s Julian Weber won with a world-leading throw of 91.06m.

The Diamond League now moves to its fourth stop in Rabat, Morocco, scheduled for May 25.
