Faith Odhiambo resigns from victims of protests compensation panel

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has officially resigned from the government’s Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Protests and Riots, a 16-member team appointed by President William Ruto just weeks ago.

Odhiambo, who had been named Vice Chairperson of the panel chaired by Prof. Makau Mutua, made the move quietly.

Her appointment had already sparked heated debate, with many Kenyans questioning whether the head of the LSK could fairly serve on a government panel that touches on such politically charged issues. After all, protests and police brutality cases are some of the biggest tests of justice and human rights in Kenya today.

So, when the country’s top lawyer takes a seat at a table chaired by a presidential adviser, people naturally ask, “Who is representing the people, and who is representing power?”

Faith Odhiambo’s resignation now seems to answer that question. While she hasn’t publicly detailed her reasons, insiders say she faced immense pressure from within the legal fraternity and the public.

Many saw her involvement as a potential conflict of interest, arguing that the LSK, which often challenges the government, must remain independent and free from executive influence.

The panel itself was formed to compensate victims of protests and riots, including those who suffered injuries, lost loved ones, or had property destroyed. It was meant to be a healing step, a sign that the government was listening. But Odhiambo’s exit raises tough questions about its credibility and future.

Can the panel still inspire public trust without her? Or will Kenyans see it as another political committee that is big on promises and short on justice?

For now, Odhiambo returns to her main role at the LSK, where she earned respect for speaking truth to power. And as for the panel, all eyes are on State House to see who replaces her. And whether the government can convince Kenyans that justice for protest victims is more than just lip service.

At the end of the day, Kenyans want more than compensation; they want accountability.
