Fake KDF brigadier re-arrested outside court after case hearing

Drama erupted at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi after plain-clothes detectives re-arrested a man accused of impersonating a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) brigadier, moments after he appeared in court for a routine mention.

DCI detectives who had camped outside the court precincts on Tuesday December 9, 2025, pounced on the alleged Fake KDF officer Joshua Muthwii Maingi as he exited the court after the mention of his Ksh1.2 million fraud case, handcuffed him,  and swiftly bundled him into a waiting Subaru before speeding off to an unknown location.

The sudden ambush unfolded just minutes after Maingi appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Dolphina Alego for the pre-trial of his criminal case.

Maingi had been out on bond following his earlier arrest and arraignment on November 25, when he was charged with four counts of personation, obtaining money by false pretences, and being in possession of public stores including a Kenya Air Force Combat uniforms.

Prosecution alleged that Maingi posed as a senior KDF brigadier and swindled two men of more than Ksh1.2 million, claiming he could secure their children admission to the Recruit Training School (RTS) at Moi Barracks, Eldoret.

The suspect is accused of issuing fake KDF admission letters as part of the elaborate scheme.

Magistrate Alego had released him on a Ksh1 million bond or an alternative cash bail of Ksh500,000 before his dramatic re-arrest.
