A Finnish MP on Tuesday, August 19 died by suicide inside the national parliament in Helsinki, Finland.
Parliament’s communications office confirmed that Eemeli Peltonen, a 30-year-old first-term MP, had passed away, as reported by Yle.fi.
The incident triggered a rapid response from police and emergency services.
According to Helsinki police, the emergency call came in at 11:06 a.m, prompting multiple patrols and medical personnel to converge on the Parliament building.
“The investigation is being handled as a cause-of-death inquiry and does not indicate any criminal involvement,” stated the authorities.
Aaro Toivonen, Director of Security for Parliament, confirmed that while official details remain limited, he does not dispute the report of a possible suicide, referenced by Iltalehti.
Finland’s Prime Minister Eemeli Peltonen confirmed that the body of the lawmaker was found inside the parliament buildings, suspending political discussions.
The atmosphere inside the building was described by an eyewitness as “chilling”, underscoring the gravity of the incident.
Authorities also clarified that no special tactical units were deployed, and the armoured vehicle observed near the site was simply a standard patrol car dispatched due to its proximity. 
Parliament is currently in recess, with the autumn session scheduled to resume on 2 September, 2025.
