Authorities have launched investigations over an incident involving a 36-year-old fisherman who reportedly committed suicide in a holding room at Kipasi Police Post in Mbita, Homa Bay County.
Police reported that the man identified as Calvins Omondi Onditi hanged himself on Sunday June 15, 2025 in the morning using his trouser after he was arrested at midnight.
According to a police report, the man who worked as a fisherman at Ndhuru beach was caught in a goat pen at a village in Ndhuru.
After being cornered, area residents called their chief who went to the scene and called police to detain him.
The family of the deceased admitted that their kin had trespassed into another home. They however dismissed a police report that Calvins committed suicide, saying he was a man with good character.
This was after the fisherman was found inside a goat pen, although his intentions were not known. Mr Evance Osano, a cousin of the deceased dismissed the narrative issued by police.
He said cases of mysterious deaths should not be happening in the country at a time when the attention is still on the death of Influencer Albert Ojwang.
Osano said the Government should act fast and address cases of deaths involving youths.
In addition, Mr Owino Achieng, the deceased’s uncle, accused police of giving false information.
He questioned why the body was moved from Kipasi Police Post before the parents of the fisherman arrived at the scene.
According to the family, the deceased did not show signs of committing suicide.
Meanwhile, Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital Chief Executive Officer Vincent Oduor said a postmortem will reveal what killed the man.
He said the body was taken to the hospital with the trouser still around the neck.
