Five days to go: 2025 AFCON set for grand kick-off in Morocco

Africa’s biggest football spectacle is just days away, with the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 set to roar into life in five days’ time.

The 35th edition of the continental showpiece will get underway in Rabat, where hosts Morocco face Comoros in a Group A opener at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00pm local time, and organisers expect a full house as fans usher in a month-long battle for African supremacy.

Anticipation has reached fever pitch as Morocco prepares to host AFCON for the first time in nearly four decades.

The North African nation last staged the tournament 37 years ago and has invested heavily in infrastructure and logistics to deliver a world-class event.

CAF General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba praised Morocco’s readiness, highlighting innovation and global outreach as key pillars of the tournament’s build-up.

He noted that the introduction of a Diaspora Tour, which took the AFCON trophy to African communities abroad, played a major role in boosting international interest and ticket sales.

“We wanted Africans everywhere to feel part of this journey,” Mosengo-Omba said, adding that Morocco’s government-backed mobilisation and strategic partnerships have elevated preparations to a new level.

The upcoming edition is expected to build on the success of the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, which attracted record-breaking global audiences across television and digital platforms.

Matches will be staged across six cities Rabat, Casablanca, Fes, Tangier, Marrakech and Agadir — with nine modern stadiums ready to host Africa’s top teams and star players.

Morocco’s recent hosting of the Women’s AFCON and the U-17 AFCON has further reinforced confidence in its organisational capability.

The tournament will culminate with the final on January 18, 2026, crowning Africa’s next football champion in what promises to be a celebration of talent, unity and passion.
