The sixth week of the FKF Premier League will be inaugurated this afternoon at the Dandora Stadium as former champions Sofapaka FC seek a crucial victory against Mara Sugar FC.
Kicking off at 3:00 pm, the match features two teams whose seasons have mirrored each other closely, separated by just a single point on the log.
Sofapaka, dubbed Batoto ba Mungu, enters the fixture rested, as their scheduled clash with Kenya Police FC last weekend was postponed to accommodate Police’s CAF Champions League commitments, which concluded with a 3-1 defeat to Sudan’s Al Hilal in Libya.
In contrast, Mara Sugar remained active, hosting Bidco United at the Awendo Green Stadium in Week 5, a match that concluded in a goalless draw.
The current standings reflect their parity, with Sofapaka in 16th position on four points from one win (against Murang’a Seal), one draw (AFC Leopards), and two losses (Gor Mahia and Kakamega Homeboyz).
Mara Sugar, known as “The Millers,” occupy 11th place with five points, having achieved one win (Ulinzi Stars), two draws (Kakamega Homeboyz and Bidco United), and one loss (Nairobi United) in their four outings.
The head-to-head record further suggests a tight affair, as both league encounters last season—Mara Sugar’s debut in the top flight ended in identical 1-1 draws.
Adding complexity to the fixture is the extensive turnover in both camps. Sofapaka rebuilt its roster with young talent from lower divisions after releasing several key players, a strategy mirrored by Mara Sugar.
Following his team’s recent draw, Mara Sugar head coach Edward Manoah defended his players, criticizing the “negative pressure” from fans and highlighting the squad’s inexperience.
He noted that the young team, many of whom have never played in the Kenyan Premier League or even the FKF Division One, requires considerable “time and patience to settle” into the demands of top-tier football.
