Former Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam to spend more time in custody

Former Central Police Station OCS Samson Kiprotich Talaam will remain in custody a while longer after the Law Court in Kibera set September 30, 2025 as the date for a ruling on whether to grant bail to him and 5 co-accused persons charged with the murder of teacher and blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang.

High Court Judge Diana Kavenza said she would deliver her ruling on the bail application at midday in an open court.

The matter came up for mention on Thursday September 11, 2025, with all six accused persons, including Talaam, appearing virtually from remand.

The ruling will determine whether they continue to be held in custody or be released on bail pending trial.

The six suspects — Talaam, Police Constable James Mukhwana, Peter Kimani, John Ngige Gitau, Gin Ammitou Abwao, and Brian Mwaniki Njue — were charged in June with the murder of Ojwang and pleaded not guilty before the Kibera Law Courts.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the accused urged the court to grant their clients bail, arguing that they are not flight risks.

The prosecution, however, opposed the application, insisting the suspects are likely to interfere with witnesses and tamper with evidence.

Judge Kavenza had earlier directed that a pre-bail report be filed to guide her in making a determination.

Ojwang, 31, died on June 8, 2025, while in custody at Central Police Station in Nairobi. Police initially claimed he had died from self-inflicted injuries after being arrested for allegedly defaming the Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

However, an autopsy conducted the same day revealed he had died from physical assault.
