Former CJ David Maraga announces 2027 presidential bid, vows to fight corruption and support Gen Zs

Former Chief Justice David Maraga officially declared his candidacy for the Kenyan presidency in the 2027 elections on June 18th, 2025, sending ripples through the nation’s political landscape.

Maraga cited widespread corruption, alarming police brutality, and the urgent need to restore the rule of law as his primary motivations for seeking the highest office.

In a candid interview, the former CJ pledged to implement significant changes, govern strictly by the constitution, and strategically build the nation’s economy.

He particularly emphasized his commitment to representing Generation Z, stating that young people require more guidance.

“Yes, I am the Gen Z Presidential candidate. I have children, and many people have children. We must mentor young people so that they take over from us,” he asserted.

Maraga strongly criticized the current government, accusing it of fostering an environment where individuals can break the law with impunity and where police brutality and constitutional violations are left unaddressed.

“Those in authority think they can kill our children like rats and treat public resources as their property,” he exclaimed, expressing his dismay.

The former Chief Justice articulated his vision to reintroduce honesty, responsibility, and robust leadership to Kenya.

He cautioned that the country stands at a perilous turning point and stressed the imperative of steering it back on track before it’s too late.

Maraga also did not shy away from directly criticising President William Ruto’s administration, stating it was disregarding the rule of law and allowing corruption to proliferate.

“Those in authority think they can do whatever they want to do and escape with it. If we continue like that we will not have a country. Given a chance I would want to call the country back to order,” he remarked.

Maraga’s entry into the presidential race adds an intriguing dynamic to the already highly anticipated 2027 elections.

Renowned for his landmark 2017 ruling that nullified the re-election of former president Uhuru Kenyatta, he has swiftly positioned himself as a moral candidate, emphasizing his strong values and unwavering respect for the constitution.
