Kenya’s former Chief Justice, David Maraga has expressed deep concern over the continued detention of celebrated Kenyan activist and photojournalist Boniface Mwangi by the Tanzanian authorities.
In a strongly worded statement shared on social media platform X, Maraga criticized the Tanzanian government for holding Mwangi without legal access, court proceedings, or consular representation, describing the act as a blatant violation of international human rights law.
Maraga called out the Kenyan government for what he termed as lack of urgency in securing Mwangi’s immediate and unconditional release.
“I condemn the failure by the Kenyan government to show any urgency in ensuring that Boniface Mwangi is freed,” he stated.
Boniface Mwangi, known for his bold activism and fearless stand against injustice, was reportedly detained under unclear circumstances while in Tanzania.
His arrest has sparked an outcry among human rights defenders and civil society organizations across East Africa.
“In clear violation of internatuinal human rights law, Mwangi has been denied access to legal council and consular representation,” Maraga emphasized. “The public deserves to know what efforts are being made to secure his release and what role the government is playing.”
Mwangi’s detention has reignitrd conversations about cross-border freedoms, regional justice, and the role of African governments in protecting their citizens abroad.
As the public awaits further updates, pressure continues to mount on both Tanzanian and Kenyan governments to act in line with human rights commitments.
