Former KEMSA Chair Irungu Nyakera Bags Oxford MBA

Irungu Nyakera, a figure in Kenya’s business and political sectors, has completed his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Oxford University. This academic achievement follows a career that has spanned both the private sector and various government appointments.

In a recent post, Nyakera noted the completion of the two-year program, which involved traveling from Nairobi to Oxford nearly every month for ten-day periods. He described the experience as one of “intense learning, growth, and self-discovery”. Thanking his family and friends for their support, he stated his goal is to use what he has learned “to make an even greater impact in Nairobi, Kenya, and beyond”.

This recent degree follows his earlier education at Starehe Boys’ Centre and School and Stanford University, where he earned a degree in Management Science and Engineering and received the Dean’s Award for Exceptional Academic Achievement.

Nyakera’s career began in the banking industry, where he held positions at Citigroup and NIC Bank before becoming the Managing Director at Equity Investment Bank at the age of 28. He transitioned to public service in 2015 when, at 33, he was appointed Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development. He later also served in the Ministry of Devolution and Planning.

More recently, Nyakera was appointed Chairperson of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) Board in May 2023. His tenure concluded in August 2024, after which he was appointed Chairman of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Board. He has since resigned from this position and has indicated his intention to run for governor in the upcoming elections using the opposition ticket under the DCP outfit.

Nyakera, who is married, generally keeps his personal life private. His net worth was estimated to be around Ksh 50 million in 2025, drawn from his work in banking and government, alongside various investments.
