Former Likuyani MP Dr. Enock Kibunguchy dies at 72

Former Likuyani Member of Parliament Dr. Enock Wamalwa Kibunguchy has died.

Dr. Kibunguchy passed away on December 23, 2025 at around 3:00 a.m. while undergoing treatment at an Eldoret hospital after a prolonged illness.

The current Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe confirmed the death.

“It is confirmed that our former MP is dead. It is a sad morning for us. For now, we are mourning because this is a big loss and a major blow to our people,” Mugabe said.

Dr. Kibunguchy first entered national politics in 2003 when he succeeded Cyrus Jirongo as Member of Parliament for the then Lugari Constituency, serving until 2007.

Following the sub division of the constituency, he became the founding Member of Parliament for Likuyani, a seat he held for two consecutive terms from 2013-2017 and 2017 to 2022.

He served under the Ford–Kenya party and was defeated in the 2022 General Election by ODM’s Innocent Mugabe, who garnered 17,534 votes against Kibunguchy’s 13,382.

Earlier this year, Dr. Kibunguchy had decamped from Ford–Kenya and declared plans to make a political comeback in the 2027 General Election under the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K).

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Dr. Kibunguchy, describing him as a respected leader, close friend, and elder.

“I extend my sincere condolences following the passing of Dr. Enock Kibunguchy, former Member of Parliament for Likuyani Constituency and previously for the larger Lugari Constituency. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and the people of Likuyani and Lugari during this period of mourning,” Governor Barasa said.

Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera also sent his message of condolence, describing the late leader as a personal friend and mentor.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend and elder, Hon. Dr. Enock Wamalwa Kibunguchy. Receiving this news has left a heavy weight on my heart, as I mourn not just a leader, but a man I knew personally and shared many moments of reflection and guidance with,” Nabwera said.

He noted that Dr. Kibunguchy’s life was defined by humility, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

“Our bond went beyond politics. He was a calm, warm, and deeply thoughtful individual, one who listened more than he spoke, and whose counsel was always rooted in wisdom and sincerity. He carried himself with rare humility, even while bearing the weight of public leadership,” Nabwera added.

The legislator particularly praised Dr. Kibunguchy’s passion for education, describing it as one of his most enduring legacies.

He said the former MP was a towering yet gentle figure whose loss will be deeply felt across the larger Lugari community.

“I have lost a friend whose wisdom I treasured and whose presence I will dearly miss. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may the values he lived by continue to light the path for generations to come,” Nabwera concluded.

Dr. Enock Wamalwa Kibunguchy was born on 20th August 1953
