Former Shinyalu MP Daniel Liula Khamasi dies at 79

Former Shinyalu Member of Parliament Daniel Liula Khamasi has died at the age of 79 after battling illness for some time.

The veteran politician passed away last night, leaving behind a legacy of public service that spanned a decade in Kenya’s Parliament.

The family confirmed the death earlier today, Tuesday 30, December, 2025.

“Today I have lost my brother, Daniel Liula Khamasi. We have lost him in Nairobi as he was receiving treatment,” said James Khamasi, brother to Liula.

Khamasi represented the Shinyalu constituency for two consecutive terms from 1997 to 2007, a period during which he championed development initiatives and advocated for his constituents in the National Assembly.

His decade-long tenure saw him establish himself as a committed leader dedicated to improving the lives of residents in the Shinyalu area.

News of his death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from political leaders across Kakamega County and beyond.

Leading the tributes, Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa expressed deep sorrow over the loss, honoring Khamasi’s legacy of service.

“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hon. Daniel Khamasi, former MP for Shinyalu. He was a dedicated servant whose contribution to Shinyalu will be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Shinyalu. May his soul rest in peace,” Governor Barasa said.

The former MP had been unwell for a period before his death, though details of his illness have not been disclosed.

Khamasi’s political career began in the late 1990s when he first won the Shinyalu parliamentary seat, riding on a wave of support from constituents who believed in his vision for the area.

He successfully defended his seat in the subsequent election, demonstrating the trust and confidence the people of Shinyalu had in his leadership.

Throughout his time in Parliament, Khamasi was known for his active participation in legislative debates and his focus on issues affecting rural communities.

He worked on various committees and pushed for policies that would benefit his constituents, particularly in areas of agriculture, education, and infrastructure development.

More details about funeral arrangements and burial plans are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
