President William Ruto has awarded former United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Kenya’s highest honour, the First Class Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.) at State House, Nairobi.

He described the award as a testament to Ban Ki-moon’s exceptional leadership, tireless advocacy and commitment to global sustainability.

President Ruto stated that Ban Ki-moon’s legacy will continue to be a great inspiration for Africa, as efforts to confront harsh climate changes continue.

“As the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, your visionary leadership brought climate change to the forefront of the global agenda, beginning with the 2007 Climate Change Summit. Your efforts galvanized international action that remains critical as Africa confronts the harsh realities of a changing climate,” President Ruto said.

He also acknowledged Ban’s contribution to the United Nations in addressing crises, including food and energy insecurity and pandemics.

“Your tenure also brought transformative change to the United Nations. You strengthened the institution’s capacity to address crisis from food and energy insecurity to pandemics while amplifying the voices of the poorest and the most marginalised.”

Additionally, Ban Ki-moon was recognised for his advocacy for human rights and gender equality.

“The creation of the UN women and the numerous initiatives you championed to end violence against women, reflect your deep conviction that sustainable development must be inclusive and must be just,” Ruto said.

“Kenya is proud to honour you for your lifetime of service to humanity,” he concluded.
