Four Members of the Kericho County Assembly (MCAs), among 18 allied to Governor Erick Mutai, have come out to strongly refute allegations that they supported the impeachment motion against the county boss on August 15, 2025.
The impeachment motion was moved by Soin Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony, where 33 Members of the County Assembly voted in favour of the motion.
The MCAs , Amos Kimutai Birir (Kapkatet Ward), Edna Tonui (Nominated MCA, Waldai), Hilary Kibet Bosuben (Cheplanget Ward), and Martin Cheruyot (Kapkugerwet Ward) condemned the claims, terming them as false, malicious, and aimed at tarnishing their reputation.
Speaking to the press on Saturday, August 23, the MCAs clarified that they did not participate in any vote to oust Governor Mutai and maintained their unwavering support for his administration. They accused certain individuals of spreading propaganda to create division within the county assembly and destabilize the county’s leadership.
They further urged residents to remain calm and disregard the false reports, reiterating their commitment to work closely with the governor in delivering development projects and services to the people of Kericho.
Governor Mutai will face the Senate plenary between Wednesday, August 27 and Friday, August 29, 2025, as he fights to remain in office following the aforementioned impeachment by MCAs.
This is after motion to establish an 11-member special committee of the Senate to investigate the grounds upon which the MCAs impeached the governor flopped after failing to secure a seconder.
This is the second time Governor Mutai has been impeached by MCAs, and it will be the second time the former university lecturer is facing the Senate. He is facing various charges including abuse of office, nepotism, irregular appointments, unlawful dismissal of senior officers, pilferage of public resources, double payments to contractors as well as abusing the provisions of the Public Finance Management Act, the Constitution and the County Governments Act.
In September 2024, Mutai survived the first impeachment after the Senate overturned decision by MPs on a technicality… the MCAs had failed to meet the threshold required to impeach a governor.
