From bathroom choreography to big paydays: Moya David opens up on his rise to fame

Digital creator and dancer Moya David has opened up about his journey to stardom, revealing how a simple idea turned into a thriving business within weeks.

Speaking during an interview on Dr. Ofweneke Tonight on TV47 hosted by Dr Ofweneke, Moya shared how he built his brand around surprise dance performances — a concept that quickly caught the attention of many.

Moya first went viral for his energetic routines to the hit song “Mi Amor” by Jovial featuring Marioo. According to him, the choreography was born in the most unexpected place.

“Nilicome up na choreography ya Mi Amor nikiwa kwa bafu na most of my first supporters walikuwa wa majuu,” he said, noting that his earliest fans were largely from abroad.

He went on to commercialise the idea, with clients paying him to surprise their partners, friends, or loved ones with personalised dance performances. The venture proved lucrative almost immediately.

“I bought my first car on the first and a half month when I started doing dancing surprises,” he revealed, underscoring how fast the business picked up.

Addressing claims that his fan base mainly consists of older women, Moya dismissed the narrative with humour. “Wamama unless mama yangu,” he quipped.

The dancer also spoke candidly about his body transformation, attributing his weight gain to recovery after an accident.

“I started gaining weight after my accident, during the healing period,” he explained. Embracing his new look, he added, “I like this version of myself, the old version was too thin, so people should stop expecting the old Moya to come back, ukiwa na kakitambi kidogo watu wanakuheshimu kidogo.”

Now confident and unapologetic, Moya says he is focused on growth, creativity, and staying authentic to himself.
