From daring jumps to heartbreaking losses: The story of Chebloch gorge

Hidden deep in the Kerio Valley of Elgeyo Marakwet County lies the breathtaking Chebloch Gorge, a steep, rocky cliff overlooking the slow-moving waters of the Kerio River.

Straddling the border between Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, this natural landmark has long been a favorite destination for tourists.

Its towering cliffs, deep waters, and stunning views draw visitors from across the country, while young local divers including women have turned it into a source of livelihood, performing daring jumps for spectators who reward them with some money.

Chebloch Gorge has a rich history of both adventure and danger. For decades, local youths have leapt from heights exceeding 70 meters into the river below, thrilling crowds who gather to watch their daring jumps.

For many divers, this practice has become a way to earn a living, relying on the generosity of onlookers to support their families.

Yet, the gorge has also witnessed tragedy. Over the years, it has claimed several lives. In 2019, a vehicle belonging to a K24 TV producer plunged into the gorge, resulting in the producer’s death.

More recently, Rodgers Kiplimo, a local diver, lost his life after strong river currents during heavy rains swept him away, with rescue efforts hampered by rising water levels.

Even in ancient times, the gorge was a place of both fear and respect. Oral history tells of Keiyo and Tugen warriors attempting to cross it during cattle raids by clinging to the tails of cows as they jumped across.

Many lives were lost in these daring movements, cementing Chebloch Gorge’s reputation as a site of courage and tragedy across generations.

Today, Chebloch Gorge remains a symbol of natural beauty, human bravery, and the resilience of the local community.

Its towering cliffs, slow-moving waters, and centuries of stories continue to inspire awe, reminding everyone that while nature can be breathtaking, it demands both respect and caution.
