Kenyan musical sensation, Bien-Aimé Baraza, became the first East African artist to grace the Breakfast Club Podcast, a top American show hosted by the power trio Charlemagne Tha God, Angela Yee and DJ Envy.
Bien navigated his artistic evolution, personal life and youth driven change during the show aired on Monday, May 26.
Currently on tour for his debut album since going solo, ‘Alusa why are you topless?’, Bien reflected on the cultural pressures he has overcome to export authentic Kenyan sounds. According to the artist, the world associates East Africa with producing legendary long-distance runners, when the region also boasts of excellent musicians like himself.
He described stepping out of Sauti Sol’s shadow to pursue a solo career as both liberating and daunting. However, he did not shy away from paying homage to his Sauti Sol brother’s on their individual musical pursuits.
“They are all making music, they are doing interesting things. Polycarp just launched a guitar line, Chimano is on a tour and Savara is producing great music,” he lauded.
A stand out moment came when Bien spoke about his marriage to Chiki Kuruka, who also manages his career. “Appointing her as my manager saved both my artistry and our relationship,” he confessed, noting how their professional partnership deepened their bond.
The ‘Ma cherie’ hit maker highlighted his upcoming sophomore album, “Alusa Continua,” asserting his continued efforts to put East African music on the global map, and reaffirming his commitment to uplift Kenya’s next generation.
Bien’s international tour has continued to enjoy major success, with sold out shows in Boston, New York, Dallas, Seattle among other major European cities.
