From parliament to poverty: former MP dies penniless

A former Member of Parliament from Uganda, Ali Hasahya, has died aged 98.

He served in the 1962 Independence Parliament until 1971 when he quit politics and retired. Three years ago he admitted to be languishing in poverty. In a previous interview, he revealed that he was dying of poverty and appealed to the public not to forget about him.

“I am dying of poverty, for us leaders who started the country, never forget us,” he told NTV Uganda. Hasahya was blind at the time of the interview.

He passed away at around 9:00pm on Monday night at Busolwe General Hospital in Butaleja District according to his son Ali Hirya.

“Yes, my dad is dead and will most likely be buried on Wednesday. We are heading for a family meeting and will share the full burial programme later,” said Ali.

Hasahya will be remembered for spearheading key development projects such as playing a key role in the the establishment of Busolwe General Hospital, where he passed away receiving treatment.

Former Bunyole MP Emmanuel Lumala announced his passing on his X account divulging that the former Mp served the country before he was born.

“Hon Ali Hasahya was an MP in 1962 before I was born!” He wrote.
