From ride cancellation to phone chaos: Nairobi woman’s ordeal raises privacy concerns

What began as an ordinary Nairobi decision quickly spiralled into an unexpected digital nightmare.

Mercy had a simple plan request a ride, keep to herself, and either read a few pages or catch up on a series before the city demanded her attention again. Like many Nairobians, she opened Uber, booked a ride, and waited.

But something felt off.

The car’s location kept shifting on the map, and the waiting time stretched longer than expected. The trip no longer felt worth it. So, like many would, she cancelled the ride.

It should have ended there.

It didn’t.

Hours later, Mercy’s phone began ringing repeatedly. Calls from unfamiliar numbers, each caller asking the same question: whether she was still looking for a driver for a Toyota Sienta.

“I was completely confused,” she recalls.

It later emerged that the driver she had cancelled had allegedly posted her phone number online, claiming she owned a vehicle and was seeking a driver partner. Almost instantly, Mercy found herself fielding calls from strangers responding to an opportunity she never advertised.

“Goodness… the number of calls I’ve received is insane,” she says, describing the experience as both shocking and exhausting.

The incident highlights how quickly everyday digital interactions can spiral out of control. What started as a routine ride request turned into what can only be described as a coordinated flood of unsolicited calls—an experience many city residents would find deeply unsettling.

Mercy has since reported the matter to Uber, which confirmed it is “taking action,” although further details remain unclear. In the meantime, the calls have continued, disrupting her daily routine.

Beyond the immediate inconvenience, the episode raises broader concerns about data privacy and misuse. In a city where phone numbers often double as personal identifiers, the unauthorised sharing of such information can expose individuals to significant risk.

For Mercy, the ordeal is far from over. She is now left navigating a stream of unknown callers while trying to understand how a cancelled ride turned into an unintended recruitment campaign.

In Nairobi’s fast-moving digital space, even the smallest decisions can carry unexpected consequences.

Sometimes, cancelling a ride is not the end of a trip it’s the beginning of a story.
